The Perkins-Tryon Partners in Education received a $4,500 grant from the Central Community Foundation to assist in providing shade structures for the Perkins-Tyron Elementary and Intermediate school playgrounds.
“We are committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for all our children,” said Sarah Wyatt, PT Partners in Education volunteer. “Excessive sun exposure poses a significant health risk to children. Currently, our playground offers limited shade.”
While the grant will assist with the estimated $22,000 cost, the organization has raised $17,000 to date for the project and is currently looking for funding to assist with the construction of a poured rubber play space for the special needs classrooms.
“The shade structure will significantly reduce UV exposure for students, and with ample shade, students can participate in outdoor activities for longer periods,” Wyatt said.
Donations for these projects can be sent to P-T Partners in Education at P.O. Box 62, Perkins, OK 74059. Questions about PT Partners in Education or the project can be sent to ptpartnersineducation@gmail.com.
The Central Community Foundation provides grants through the Operation Round Up program at Central Rural Electric Cooperative. Members of CREC can round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar to help organizations and residents in need throughout Central’s seven-county service area.
