St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church has been awarded a $2,700 grant from the Central Community Foundation to support the church’s backpack ministry which supplies 150 middle school students with food weekly.
“When we started roughly five or six years ago, we were packing 50 backpacks,” said Darlene Waggoner, the backpack ministry coordinator. “It’s grown tremendously and it’s a wonderful group of volunteers who have fun while doing this for our community.”
The St. Francis Xavier backpack program, a volunteer-driven initiative, meets monthly to pack bags with nutritious food. The program aims to ensure that no middle school child goes hungry when school-provided meals are unavailable. It runs for the entire school year, including Thanksgiving and spring break. The Central Community Foundation provides grants through the Operation Round Up program at Central Rural Electric Cooperative. Members of CREC can round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar to help organizations and residents in need throughout Central’s seven-county service area.
